Adapting to change.

Things change constantly. Family members die; careers change, as do both personal and working relationships, employees get promoted, employees leave, the worlds keep turning…

When a change appears, accept it, understand it and learn how to deal with it. (don’t worry, this isn’t a Russell Brand blog...) You may not believe you deserve it, or you may just not be ready for it, but the only way to move forward and get the most out of it is to embrace it and understand how it can work in your favour.

Guess what? The positive changes can be as hard to adapt to as the negative ones. In the ever-changing landscape of the London property market, it can be tough to keep up (just ask any Lettings Negotiator that is currently progressing their own deals or any New Homes Broker who has finally got their head around Help To Buy!!!).

In what is approaching four years in Property Recruitment (and a few more within Property before that), I could talk your ear off about the changes I have seen; credit crunch, Stamp Duty, elections, Arab Spring, Right To Work, GDPR etc., all of which impact these two markets in different ways. Whilst on the surface they, at the time seemed like mostly negative changes, I and we all had to embrace them, and we are all still here right!

Change is constant, so we usually don’t notice the little or the expected changes; it’s when you are caught off-guard that you can get confused. The trick though is to know that it’s just one of the millions of changes that are going to happen during your lifetime and, good or not so good, you need to do what you can to just roll with it. If you are resistant to change, it will make it much harder to adapt. We cannot control the events of change in our life, but we can control how we react to the impact that these events have on our lives.

I’ve changed over the years, along with my industry, my team and my responsibilities, of course not in my appearance (I haven’t aged a day) but my mindset, my outlook, my goals and ambitions. Whilst things around me have changed, I have too. GKR continues to change the perception of property recruiters in the market and that’s partly why we continue to be so successful but wholly, that’s why I love being a part of the team.
